In short: From a hardcore band at age 14 to being named NME's most forward-thinking musician, Dave Sitek has shaped the sonic landscape of the 21st century. Yet, the man behind the hits for TV on the Radio and Yeah Yeah Yeahs remains deeply critical of the very movement he helped define.

Born in 1972 in Columbia, Maryland, Dave Sitek’s musical foundation was laid by a family that encouraged exploration. His mother, a child psychologist, famously allowed him to practice with a hardcore band in his house when he was just 14. His early interests were further shaped by his Aunt Paula, who had seen Jimi Hendrix in the 1960s and was a fan of Blondie and Talking Heads.

Sitek rose to prominence as a central figure in the Brooklyn indie scene, working with influential acts like TV on the Radio, Liars, and Foals. His versatility as a producer and remixer spans genres, from free jazz-influenced reworkings of Nine Inch Nails to producing Scarlett Johansson's 2008 album, 'Anywhere I Lay My Head'. NME's 'Future 50' list, which highlights music's most innovative figures, placed him at the top in April 2008.

Despite his deep ties to the Brooklyn community—having once worked in a coffee shop with future bandmates Kyp Malone and Chris Taylor—Sitek holds a cynical view of the modern indie movement. He has criticized bands that migrate to Brooklyn solely to exploit its reputation as a 'creative meca' for magazine attention. He argues that many of these self-promoting artists are more interested in opportunism than artistry. This skepticism eventually led him to settle in Beverly Hills, a city he describes as 'egocentric' but one where people cannot easily hide their true interests. In his solo project, Maximum Balloon, he continues to collaborate with longtime friends like David Byrne and Karen O, seeking a focus on beautiful songwriting over industry trends.
