From NFL head coach to FOX Sports analyst: the versatile career of Dave Wannstedt
In short: A former offensive tackle turned championship-winning assistant and NFL head coach, Dave Wannstedt has navigated the high-stakes worlds of the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins. His journey through professional and collegiate football reveals a career defined by deep professional bonds and significant coaching transitions.
Born in Baldwin, Pennsylvania, on May 21, 1952, Wannstedt’s football journey began as an offensive tackle for the University of Pittsburgh, where he blocked for future Heisman Trophy winner Tony Dorsett. After a brief stint in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers, he transitioned into coaching, beginning as a graduate assistant at Pitt in 1975.
Wannstedt's career is deeply intertwined with that of Jimmy Johnson. The two forged a lasting bond while coaching at Pitt in 1977. This partnership spanned several teams, including the Oklahoma State Cowboys, the Miami Hurricanes—where they won a national championship in 1987—and the Dallas Cowboys, where Wannstedt served as defensive coordinator in 1989.
His tenure as an NFL head coach included leading the Chicago Bears from 1993 to 1998 and the Miami Dolphins from 2000 to 2004. In Miami, he was tasked with guiding the franchise following the retirement of Dan Marino. He later returned to his alma mater, the University of Pittsburgh, as head coach from 2005 to 2010, leading the team to a 10-win season in 2009.
Beyond the sidelines, Wannstedt has transitioned into media, serving as a FOX Sports football studio analyst since 2014 and hosting programs such as Pro Football Weekly on NBC Sports Chicago. His career reflects the multifaceted nature of professional football, moving from the trenches of the line to the scrutiny of the broadcast booth.
