How a biochemistry PhD and a fishing trip defined melodic hardcore
In short: In 1977, the Descendents were a surf-punk experiment in California. By the early 1980s, they had revolutionized the scene by blending aggressive hardcore with infectious melodies, driven by a philosophy of achieving the "All"—a concept born during a fishing trip on a boat named Orca.
The Descendents emerged from Manhattan Beach, California, in 1977. Originally known as "The Itch," the group was formed by Frank Navetta, Tony Lombardo, and Bill Stevenson. Their early sound was a "caffinated" blend of rock, surf, and pop-punk. However, the addition of vocalist Milo Aukerman in 1979 shifted their trajectory toward melodic hardcore, a style that merged high-speed aggression with catchy, melodic structures.
This melodic approach was exemplified by their 1982 debut album, Milo Goes to College. The album's name and cover—showing Aukerman as a 'class nerd'—alluded to his choice to quit the group to pursue biology studies at the University of California, San Diego. Aukerman eventually earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry, a fact he noted was somewhat "uncool" for a punk musician.
Central to the band's identity is the concept of "All," a philosophy developed by Stevenson and Pat McCuistion while fishing for mackerel in 1980. Defined as the total extent or the pursuit of the utmost to avoid stagnation, it became a personal religion for the band members. This concept was immortalized on their 1987 album, All, and influenced their musical direction for years.
The band's history is marked by several shifts. Following Aukerman's departure for academia, the group underwent a hiatus and later reformed with different lineups, including the addition of Stephen Egerton and Karl Alvarez in 1987. They have navigated multiple hiatuses, including a significant period between 1983 and 1985, and a second reformation in 1995 when Aukerman returned to recording.
