The explosive speedster who redefined the role of a dual-threat specialist
In short: DeSean Jackson didn't just play football; he electrified it. Known for his blistering speed and ability to score from anywhere on the field, he became a rare Pro Bowl talent capable of dominating as both a wide receiver and a return specialist simultaneously.
Born in Los Angeles on December 1, 1986, Jackson emerged from Long Beach Polytechnic High School as a premier athletic talent. Prior to his pro career, he excelled in athletics, recording a 10.5-second 100-metre sprint, which attracted interest from the Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays. This multi-sport foundation contributed to the agility that would later define his professional career.
During his collegiate years at the University of California, Berkeley, Jackson became a sensation. He earned first-team All-American honors and set Pac-10 records for punt returns for a touchdown, both in a single season and throughout his career. His ability to impact the game through special teams was so profound that he was awarded the inaugural Randy Moss Award as the nation's top returner.
Jackson entered the NFL in 2008, selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round. His rookie season was particularly notable, as he became the only receiver in NFL history to record over 100 receiving yards in each of his first two games, a feat matched only by the Eagles' Don Looney in 1940.
Despite his small physical stature—measured at 5'9"" and just over 170 pounds—his impact was undeniable. Even Hall of Famer Jerry Rice once remarked that Jackson possessed all the talent in the world to succeed at the next level. Following his playing days, Jackson transitioned into coaching, eventually being named the head football coach at Delaware State University near the end of the 2024 season.
