Elfrid Payton and the rare art of the consecutive triple-double in professional basketball
In short: Elfrid Payton is a journeyman point guard whose career is defined by streaks of elite playmaking. From his early days as a defensive standout to his historic run of five consecutive triple-doubles, Payton has carved a unique path through the NBA, G League, and international basketball leagues across over a decade.
Born in 1994, Elfrid Payton emerged from John Ehret High School to become a defensive force at Louisiana–Lafayette. His collegiate excellence culminated in 2014 when he earned the Lefty Driesell Award as the national defensive player of the year. Selected 10th overall in the 2014 NBA draft, he was immediately traded to the Orlando Magic, where he quickly established himself as a triple-double threat. By March 2015, he became the first Magic player to record consecutive triple-doubles, a feat not achieved by an NBA rookie since 1997.
Payton’s playmaking reached a historic peak in March 2019 while playing for the New Orleans Pelicans. He recorded five consecutive triple-doubles, joining an elite group including Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and Russell Westbrook as one of the few players since the 1983–84 season to achieve such a streak. This performance highlighted his ability to control a game, though his career has been marked by frequent team changes, injuries, and stints in the G League and international leagues, including time in Puerto Rico.
Beyond his statistics, Payton was once defined by his distinctive, free-flowing hairstyle, which made him a fan favorite during his initial tenure with the Orlando Magic. He eventually cut his hair in May 2018. His career remains a testament to persistence; after leading the NBA G League in assists during the 2023–24 season, he continued to cycle through various NBA franchises, including the Charlotte Hornets and multiple stints with the New Orleans Pelicans, demonstrating the enduring demand for his specific brand of veteran playmaking.
The trajectory of Payton’s career illustrates the volatility of professional basketball, where defensive prowess and high-level assist numbers must be balanced against injury history and team needs. Whether as a starter or a rotational piece, his ability to facilitate offense has kept him relevant in a league that constantly evolves, proving that even players who navigate a nomadic career can leave a mark on the record books.
