The 1993 album that was essentially a solo effort for Roland Orzabal
In short: When Tears for Fears released Elemental in 1993, the band was missing a core piece. With co-founder Curt Smith gone, frontman Roland Orzabal was left to navigate a period of professional upheaval, financial legal battles, and a complete reimagining of the band's musical identity.
Following the 1991 departure of co-founder Curt Smith, the 1993 album Elemental marked a significant transition for Tears for Fears. While released under the band's name, the project was largely a solo endeavor for Roland Orzabal. He assumed sole leadership, recording much of the material at Neptune's Kitchen, a home studio converted from an old photographer's studio. To manage the mounting costs of long studio sessions, Orzabal found it economically sensible to work from home, even decorating the space with acid-doused copper to create an underwater aesthetic.
The songwriting process during this era was prolific, driven by Orzabal's collaboration with musician Alan Griffiths. The duo reportedly produced a song nearly every day. This period was also marked by significant personal and professional tension. Orzabal used the album to process the 'divorce' from Smith, with tracks like 'Fish Out of Water' serving as a direct salvo against his former partner. The lyrics also addressed the band's fractured business end, including a pointed reference to former manager Paul King, who was later convicted of fraudulent activities.
Despite the internal shifts, the album achieved notable commercial success. The single 'Break It Down Again' became a hit across North America and Europe, reaching the US top 40 and the UK top 20. The album itself peaked at number 5 in the UK and earned Gold certifications in the US, Canada, and France. While critics like the New York Times noted an 'undertone of meanness' in the work, others, including Rolling Stone, praised Orzabal's ability to maintain the band's lush, melodic sheen despite the loss of his longtime collaborator.
