The striker who defied age to conquer the Italian top flight
In short: Most footballers fade as they approach forty, but Fabio Quagliarella used his final seasons to rewrite the record books. From a Serie C2 loan to becoming one of the oldest scorers in Serie A history, his career is a masterclass in longevity and precision.
Fabio Quagliarella’s career is defined by a remarkable ability to adapt and persist. After making his Serie A debut for Torino on 14 May 2000, he navigated the complexities of Italian football, including a stint in Serie C2 with Fiorentina and a productive period in Serie C1 with Chieti. These early years provided the foundation for a professional journey that saw him represent eight different Italian clubs, including major names like Napoli, Juventus, and Sampdoria.
His peak years were marked by significant individual and team achievements. During his time with Juventus, he secured three consecutive Serie A titles from 2011–12 to 2013–14, alongside two Supercoppa Italiana trophies in 2012 and 2013. At Sampdoria, he achieved a rare feat in the 2018–19 season, scoring in eleven consecutive league games—a record previously held only by Gabriel Batistuta. That same season, Quagliarella captured the Capocannoniere title as the league's top scorer with 26 goals.
Perhaps most impressive is his enduring presence in the Italian top flight. Even at 40 years and 109 days old, he became the fourth oldest player to score in Serie A, following Zlatan Ibrahimović, Alessandro Costacurta, and Silvio Piola. By the time he retired in November 2023, he had become only the fifth outfield player to reach 550 Serie A appearances, joining the ranks of legends like Francesco Totti and Paolo Maldini.
Quagliarella's legacy is not just about numbers, but also about character. He was recognized with the Premio Gentleman Fairplay in 2017 and the Scirea Career Award in 2018, honors that celebrate both his playing ability and his personality on the pitch.
