The studio that grew from a 'stupidly macho' brainstorming session
In short: Facepunch Studios emerged from a search for a professional identity during a 2004 brainstorming session. The team wanted a title that felt suitably macho for their first project. While the original game failed, the studio survived by pivoting to a sandbox playground that eventually sold over 20 million copies.
Facepunch Studios was founded in June 2004 by Garry Newman specifically for the release of a game called Facewound. The studio's name was born from a brainstorming session where the team sought a title that felt 'stupidly macho' for that specific project. Although Facewound served as the title for the game, Facepunch was retained as the company name since it was considered 'too funny sounding to just leave to die.' This sandbox 'playground' eventually eclipsed Facewound, leading to the cancellation of the original game and the initial disbanding of the studio. However, Garry's Mod became a massive success, selling over 20 million copies by September 2021. It remains a flagship title, allowing players to pose assets from games like Half-Life 2 and Portal using custom tools.
Facepunch later pivoted toward the survival genre with Rust. The game was inspired by the brutal player-versus-player model of DayZ combined with the crafting mechanics of Minecraft. Unlike many titles, Facepunch intentionally avoided an artificial scoreboard to encourage 'playing nice,' arguing that forcing good behavior would remove the core gameplay fun. Rust saw rapid early success, selling 150,000 copies in its first two weeks—significantly outperforming the initial two-week sales of Garry's Mod, which were only 34,000.
Today, the Birmingham-based studio employs over 50 people and is currently developing S&box. This spiritual successor to Garry's Mod has undergone significant technical shifts, moving from Unreal Engine 4 to Valve's Source 2 engine in March 2020. The project aims to maintain the user-created gamemode focus of its predecessor while utilizing C# as a backend for content.
