The rebirth of Albion: a new era for the Fable franchise
In short: After years of silence following the closure of Lionhead Studios, a legendary fantasy world is returning. This isn't a simple sequel, but a massive reimagining of Albion, built with modern open-world technology and a living population that breathes even when you aren't watching.
Scheduled for release on 23 February 2027, the upcoming Fable marks the first mainline entry since 2012's Fable: The Journey. Developed by Playground Games, the project aims to be a 'new beginning' rather than a direct continuation of the original trilogy's timeline. While it introduces a fresh narrative, it retains the series' core DNA: moral choices, player freedom, and a signature sense of British humour inspired by comedies like The Office and Peep Show.
The technical ambition is centered on the 'Living Population' system, which manages over 1,000 NPCs, each possessing individual personalities, routines, and relationships. These characters continue to interact and develop even in the player's absence. To power this, developers utilized the ForzaTech engine. While capable of high-fidelity rendering, the team had to build significant new technology on top of this racing-centric engine to support third-person animation and complex cinematics, a decision that reportedly extended development time.
Gameplay revolves around 'style-weaving,' a combat system allowing seamless transitions between melee, ranged, and magic. The world of Albion is a fairy-tale-inspired landscape featuring locations from the village of Briar Hill to the city of Bowerstone. Players will navigate a moral landscape where even small decisions—such as whether to spare a talking pig—can alter their reputation and how the world responds to them. The project also features a diverse cast, including Hayley Atwell as the formidable Hero of Wraithmarsh, Isabel.
