The club that was denied promotion by its own stadium
In short: Falkirk F.C. has experienced the highs of Scottish Cup glory and the lows of being barred from the top flight. Despite winning the second tier a record eight times, strict stadium regulations once prevented the club from ascending to the Scottish Premier League, forcing them to leave their historic home.
Founded in 1876, Falkirk F.C. has a storied history in Scottish football, characterized by both remarkable achievements and frustrating setbacks. The club has achieved significant success, including winning the Scottish Cup in 1913 and 1957. In the early 1900s, they were a dominant force, finishing as runners-up to Celtic in both the 1907–08 and 1909–10 seasons. During this era, they became the first Scottish club to score over 100 goals in a single season.
However, the club's trajectory was famously disrupted by the formation of the Scottish Premier League (SPL) in 1998. The SPL introduced strict stadium criteria, requiring a 10,000-capacity all-seater venue. Falkirk's historic home, Brockville Park, which the club had occupied for 118 years since 1885, failed to meet these standards. This regulatory barrier denied the club promotion on three separate occasions, even when they earned it on the pitch.
The struggle to meet these requirements led to a major transition for the club. After unsuccessful attempts to ground-share at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh or New Broomfield, Falkirk eventually moved to the new Falkirk Stadium in 2004. This move finally allowed them to meet the reduced 6,000-capacity requirement and gain promotion to the SPL for the 2005–06 season. This era also saw the club qualify for the inaugural UEFA Europa League season in 2009–10 following a strong performance in the Scottish Cup.
