From dental assistant to the voice of a generation
In short: Before she was a celebrated voice actress, Fairouz Ai worked in a dental clinic. Her journey from a graphic design student to an award-winning talent involves unexpected career pivots, a multicultural upbringing, and a deep-seated passion for manga that eventually transformed her life.
Born in Tokyo on 6 July 1993, Fairouz Ai Kadota carries a name inspired by the legendary Lebanese singer Fairuz. Her early years were shaped by a multicultural background, being the daughter of a Japanese mother and an Egyptian father. This heritage includes a period of her elementary education spent at the Cairo Japanese School, and she remains conversant in Arabic, including the Egyptian dialect.
Her path to the recording studio was far from linear. Despite a growing fascination with the JoJo's Bुizarre Adventure manga series during her junior high years, her parents initially disapproved of her acting ambitions. Consequently, she pursued studies in graphic design at a vocational school and even spent a year working as a dental assistant to save enough money for voice acting training.
Fairouz's professional breakthrough arrived in 2019 with her role as Hibiki Sakura in How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?. This success led to a string of significant roles, including Jolyne Cujoh in the Stone Ocean arc of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure in 2021, and Power in the Chainsaw Man franchise. At the 14th Seiyu Awards, she earned the Best New Actress title during 2020.
The industry landscape has also shifted around her. Following the closure of the agency Pro-Fit in early 2022, she joined Raccoon Dog, before eventually moving to Mausu Promotion in March 2025. Her career has also been marked by personal resilience; in late 2024, she took a temporary hiatus to focus on recovering from a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder.
