From boy soprano to Sundance star: the rise of Ferdia Walsh-Peelo
In short: Before he was appearing in major films like CODA, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo was a child prodigy. After winning numerous prizes as a boy soprano, he transitioned from touring with Mozart to becoming a recognizable face in international television and film, proving his versatility as both a musician and an actor.
Born on 12 October 1999 in Ashford, County Wicklow, Walsh-Peelo's career began long before he reached the silver screen. At just seven years old, he was already performing as a boy soprano, a musical foundation that led to significant early achievements. By age twelve, he was touring Ireland in a production of Mozart's Magic Flute, followed by a role in Britten's Turn of the Screw.
His transition into acting was marked by a notable appearance on the Late Late Toy Show in 2012, where he demonstrated his skills on both piano and vocals. This early momentum paved the way for his film debut in the 2016 musical comedy-drama Sing Street. During the film's screening at the Sundance Film Festival, Walsh-Peelo performed live on stage alongside co-star Mark McKenna.
Since then, his filmography has expanded across genres. He appeared in the History series Vikings from 2017 to 2020, playing Alfred the Great for the show's final two seasons. In 2021, he starred in the Sundance hit CODA, playing Miles, the singing partner and love interest of Ruby. This performance contributed to the cast winning the SAG Award for Best Ensemble. Beyond acting, Walsh-Peelo has remained active in music, performing with the band The Fynches as of 2022, and serves as an Ambassador for UNICEF Ireland's Emergency Lessons program.
His diverse skillset—ranging from classical vocal training under his mother, soprano Toni Walsh, to high-profile dramatic roles—highlights a career built on a foundation of formal musical excellence and early professional exposure.
