In short: Forrest Gregg was a cornerstone of the legendary Vince Lombardi era, earning an 'iron man' reputation through relentless durability. Beyond his championship rings, he navigated the highs of Super Bowl victories and the profound challenge of rebuilding a disgraced college program from the ground up.

A cornerstone of the Green Bay Packers dynasty, Gregg was a Pro Football Hall of Fame offensive tackle who played 16 seasons in the NFL. He achieved the rare feat of winning six NFL championships, including five with the Packers and a Super Bowl VI title with the Dallas Cowboys. He gained the 'iron man' nickname after appearing in 188 straight matches, a league record at the time, from 1956 to 1971. He earned All-NFL honours for eight consecutive years between 1960 and 1967. Additionally, he secured nine Pro Bowl selections during his lengthy tenure.

Gregg's career transitioned from elite player to diverse head coach. He led the Cincinnati Bengals to the Super Bowl in 1981, though they ultimately lost 26–21 to the San Francisco 49ers. His coaching tenure included stints with the Cleveland Browns, the Green Bay Packers, and two Canadian Football League teams: the Toronto Argonauts and the Shreveport Pirates. He remains one of only two coaches to leave the Bengals with a winning record. His coaching journey also included roles with the San Diego Chargers and the Cleveland Browns. He eventually finished his professional coaching career back in Green Bay.

Perhaps his most daunting task was his return to his alma mater, Southern Methodist University (SMU), in 1988. He arrived to rebuild a program devastated by the NCAA's 'death penalty.' Facing a roster of undersized freshmen and a depleted squad, Gregg focused on restoring dignity to the Mustangs. Despite a difficult 3–19 coaching record, he later reflected that the courage shown by those players was one of the most pleasurable experiences of his life. Following his coaching stint, he served as the university's athletic director until 1994. He also held a vice president position with the Ottawa Renegades.
