From a name change to scoring hat-tricks in the NRL
In short: Born in Auckland to Samoan parents, Greg Marzhew has navigated a complex path through professional rugby league. From junior ranks in New Zealand to high-scoring seasons in the NRL, his journey is defined by personal identity shifts and remarkable offensive consistency on the field.
Born on 4 April 1997, Greg Marzhew began his journey in Auckland, New Zealand, playing junior rugby league for the Mangere East Hawks. His path to the professional ranks involved significant movement, including a move to Melbourne in 2011 and a relocation to Logan City, Queensland, in 2013. In 2020, he made a significant personal decision to adopt the surname Marzhew, choosing to honor his maternal grandfather, Ta’ilevao Marzhew, moving away from his birth name, Lelesiuao.
Marzhew's professional ascent saw him represent the Junior Kiwis in 2016 and 2017. After developing through the Gold Coast Titans and Parramatta Eels systems—where he was named to the Holden Cup Team of the Year in 2017—he finally made his NRL debut for the Gold Coast in 2021. His ability to find the try line became a hallmark of his career, evidenced by scoring nine tries in 17 games during the 2022 season.
A pivotal shift occurred in November 2022 when he moved from the Gold Coast to the Newcastle Knights in a player swap for Chris Randall. His impact in Newcastle was immediate and prolific. In 2023, he scored 22 tries across 22 appearances, helping the club to a 5th-place finish. Despite a disciplinary setback in June 2023 when he was demoted for missing the team bus, his scoring prowess remained high, including a notable five-try performance in 2026 that equalled a club record held by Edrick Lee.
