From boxing rings to NBA stardom: the rise of the Dancing Bear
In short: Before he was dunking on NBA legends, Guerschon Yabusele trained as a boxer. Now a global basketball force, the French power forward has navigated the NBA, the Chinese Basketball Association, and European glory, proving that versatility is the ultimate weapon in professional sports.
Raised in Dreux, France, by parents who moved from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Yabusele’s sporting beginnings were unconventional. Before finding his rhythm on the hardwood, he spent his youth training as a boxer. His basketball journey began in earnest in 2012 with the youth sections of Chorale Roanne Basket, eventually progressing through the French LNB Pro B and LNB Pro A leagues.
Yabusele’s ascent to the global stage was marked by a bold strategic move. In 2015, he joined Rouen Métropole Basket to bolster his NBA draft stock. This gamble paid off in 2016 when he became one of only four Frenchmen to enter the NBA draft. Though projected as a late first-round or early second-round pick, he surprised scouts by being selected 16th overall by the Boston Celtics.
His career has been a whirlwind of international movement. He has found success in the Chinese Basketball Association with the Shanghai Sharks, where he was an All-Star, and achieved European dominance with Real Madrid, winning a EuroLeague title in 2023. His playing style, characterized by high-energy performances, earned him the nickname 'the Dancing Bear' during his tenure in Boston.
On the international stage, Yabusele has been a cornerstone of the French national team. He secured silver medals at both the 2020 and 2024 Olympics. His performance in the 2024 Paris Games was particularly noteworthy; he led France to a quarter-final victory over Canada and a semi-final win over Germany, famously scoring 20 points in the final against the United States, which included a baseline poster dunk on LeBron James.
