How a Dubai football academy achieved unprecedented back-to-back league promotions in the UAE
In short: Founded in 2019, Gulf United FC transformed from a grassroots academy into a professional force. By securing consecutive league titles, the club became the first in Emirati football history to achieve back-to-back promotions, proving that a private academy could successfully navigate the competitive landscape of the UAE football pyramid.
Established in Dubai by Mo Jarad and brothers Conor and Jordi Shiels, Gulf United operates under a joint British and Emirati ownership model. The club’s rapid ascent began in the 2021–22 season when it joined the UAE Third Division. Under the management of Steven Taylor, the team went undefeated in the group stages and defeated Fleetwood United 3–1 to claim the inaugural title.
The momentum continued into the 2022–23 season. After a strong start, the club secured the UAE Second Division championship, marking a historic milestone as the first team to earn consecutive promotions within the UAE structure. This feat was particularly notable given the difficulty of the transition; previous clubs promoted to the second tier had struggled, with some facing immediate relegation.
Beyond its league success, Gulf United has cultivated a unique identity through high-profile partnerships and global exhibition matches. The club was the first grassroots academy in the Middle East to partner with Adidas and has hosted stars like Zinedine Zidane. Its academy, which serves over 83 nationalities, also functions as a major scholarship provider, placing more than 100 players into university programs across North America.
The club’s professional trajectory has remained steady since entering the UAE First Division. After a 15th-place finish in their debut campaign, they improved to 10th in the 2024–25 season. By integrating experienced international talent with academy prospects, Gulf United has consolidated its status as a permanent fixture in the second tier, while simultaneously expanding its community footprint through initiatives like the Volkswagen Cup.
