From River Plate to the Premier League: the journey of Guido Rodríguez
In short: A defensive midfielder's path often involves navigating heavy criticism and finding rhythm in new leagues. For Guido Rodríguez, the journey from Argentina to Europe and the Premier League has been defined by significant transfers, international honors, and a steady evolution in one of football's most demanding roles.
Born on 12 April 1994, Guido Rodríguez began his professional career at River Plate. His early years were marked by a struggle for consistent playing time, appearing in only sixteen league matches and twice in the Copa Argentina before moving on. After a brief loan at Defensa y Justicia in 2016, he found success in Mexico with Club Tijuana, where he recorded thirty-nine league appearances and five goals.
His move to Club América in July 2017 for a reported $7 million marked a turning point. Under manager Miguel Herrera, Rodríguez became a vital component of the squad, helping them secure the 2018 Apertura title. This success earned him the Balón de Oro award in July 2019. His dominance in Mexico was further recognized when he was named the Liga MX Defensive Midfielder of the Year for both the 2016–17 and 2018–19 seasons.
Rodríguez's European career began in January 2020 with a transfer to La Liga's Real Betis. Despite early criticism, he found his footing, notably scoring a goal against Osasuna in July 2020 and playing the full 120 minutes in Betis's 2021–22 Copa del Rey victory against Valencia. After leaving Betis following the 2023–24 season, he moved to West Ham United on a free transfer in August 2024, eventually returning to Spain to join Valencia in early 2026.
On the international stage, Rodríguez has been a consistent presence for Argentina. He earned his first cap against Brazil in June 2017 and was part of the squad for the 2019 Copa América. He notably scored the winning goal against Uruguay during the 2021 Copa América and was selected for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, appearing in a group stage match against Mexico.
