In short: Haganai, short for a title meaning I Don't Have Many Friends, follows a group of social misfits who form the Neighbors Club. Created by Yomi Hirasaka, the series draws from his own experiences with poor communication skills and isolation to examine the difficult, often messy process of finding connection.

The series centers on Kodaka Hasegawa, a transfer student whose fierce eyes and spotty-blond hair lead classmates to wrongly label him a delinquent. He teams up with the abrasive Yozora Mikazuki, a childhood friend he once mistook for a boy, to establish the Neighbors Club. Their goal is simple: to practice social skills and learn how to make friends. They are joined by an eclectic cast, including the arrogant idol Sena Kashiwazaki, a genius scientist named Rika Shiguma, and Kobato, Kodaka's cosplaying younger sister.

Author Yomi Hirasaka intentionally designed the characters as opposites to those in his previous work, Light Novel Club, which featured individuals with healthy relationships. By contrast, the Neighbors Club is defined by the members' shared lack of social experience and their various eccentricities. Throughout the light novels, which ran from 2009 to 2015, the narrative explores their attempts at school and outside activities, often highlighting the friction between their abrasive personalities and their underlying desire for companionship.

The franchise expanded significantly beyond the original novels, spawning multiple manga adaptations, two anime seasons, and a 2014 live-action film. While some critics praised the series for its character development and humor, others found the later installments formulaic, noting that the characters often struggled to evolve. Despite the mixed reception regarding its reliance on harem tropes and repetitive jokes, Haganai remains a notable exploration of the social anxieties and communication barriers faced by those who feel they do not fit in.
