In short: Hakeem Nicks was a force of nature for the North Carolina Tar Heels, setting 14 school records and becoming the program's first 1,000-yard receiver. Yet, his storied collegiate career is marked by a controversial asterisk following an academic fraud investigation.

During his tenure at the University of North Carolina, Nicks was a statistical phenomenon. By the end of his junior season, he had established 14 school records, including 181 career receptions, 2,580 career receiving yards, and 21 career touchdowns. His final collegiate season in 2008 was particularly dominant, as he tallied 1,222 yards and 12 touchdowns, leading the ACC with a 94.0 receiving yards per game average. During his final year, he also tied for the third-highest single-season reception total in school history. He also became North Carolina's first 1,000-yard receiver.

However, this era of dominance was complicated by a scandal. A conviction for academic fraud involving the 2008 school year was handed to Nicks in 2012, four years following his university departure. The investigation revealed that Nicks had received money and jewelry during his time at UNC. Consequently, while his record-setting statistics remain in the school's media guide, the university has stated they will place an asterisk next to his records. The investigation concluded that he had accepted various gifts and cash during his college years.

The New York Giants drafted Nicks in 2009, choosing him during the first round as the 29th player selected. He became a vital component of the Giants' offense, most notably during their 2011 postseason run. In Super Bowl XLVI, he was the leading receiver, recording 10 receptions for 109 yards in a 21–17 victory over the New England Patriots. His 2011 postseason performance remains a franchise record, where he amassed 444 receiving yards and four touchdowns across three games. He was selected as the 29th pick in the 2009 NFL draft. His postseason statistics include a franchise-record 28 receptions and 15.86 yards per catch.
