The versatile athlete who conquered every major college football honor
In short: Most elite athletes specialize early, but Jacob Rodriguez redefined versatility by switching positions and dominating the landscape. From a freshman quarterback to an All-American linebacker, his trajectory from Minnesota to the NFL illustrates a rare mastery of both sides of the ball.
Born in Hastings, Minnesota, and raised in Wichita Falls, Texas, Rodriguez began his collegiate journey at the University of Virginia. However, his path took a significant turn after his freshman year in 2021. Despite playing all twelve games as a quarterback—accumulating modest yardage on both runs and passes—he entered the NCAA transfer portal to seek a different role.
Rodriguez relocated to Texas Tech, where he transitioned to linebacker. This shift proved transformative. By 2024, he emerged as a dominant force in the Big 12, leading the conference in total and solo tackles. His performance was marked by high-impact plays, including sacks, interceptions, and forced fumbles. In a single season, he recorded 127 tackles and five sacks, earning him a spot on the All-Big 12 first team.
The 2025 season served as his crowning achievement. Rodriguez became the first player in Texas Tech history to win four major individual honors: the Chuck Bednarik, Butkus, Lombardi, and Bronko Nagurski awards. He also finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting after leading his team to their first Big 12 Championship. His professional career began in 2026 when he was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the second round.
Beyond the field, Rodriguez maintains a personal life tied to service and faith. He married Emma, an aviation officer in the United States Army who flies UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, on July 1, 2023.
