From a left-handed high schooler to an NBA defensive powerhouse
In short: Before he was a cornerstone for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Jaden McDaniels was a high school phenom forced to shoot with only his left hand. His journey from a Washington state win streak to professional stardom is a masterclass in adapting to adversity and elite physical development.
Jaden McDaniels’s ascent began at Federal Way High School in Washington, where he played alongside his older brother, Jalen. During his freshman year, an injury to his right elbow forced him to rely solely on his left hand for shooting. Despite this setback, he contributed to a historic 63-game winning streak, the longest in Washington state history since 1977.
By his junior year, McDaniels had transformed into a dominant force, averaging 21.3 points, 10 rebounds, and 3.3 blocks per game. His senior season saw him break the school's single-game scoring record with 51 points against Todd Beamer High School, surpassing a mark previously held by NBA veteran Donny Marshall. These performances earned him recognition as a McDonald's All-American and the Washington Gatorade Player of the Year.
After a standout collegiate career with the Washington Huskies, McDaniels entered the NBA via the 2020 draft, selected 28th overall by the Los Angeles Lakers before being traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder and eventually the Minnesota Timberwolves. While his career has seen flashes of volatility—including a fine for a jersey-ripping altercation with Klay Thompson in November 2023—his defensive prowess has become undeniable.
Recently, McDaniels has evolved into a primary offensive threat. In the 2024-25 season, he started all 8 Му82 games, averaging 12.2 points and 5.7 rebounds. His playoff performances have been equally impactful, including a 32-point, 10-rebound effort against the Denver Nuggets in April 2026, cementing his status as an elite two-way player.
