How a high school phenom became the NFL's first unanimous number one

His collegiate career at the University of South Carolina was marked by both historic highs and injury concerns. As a sophomore in 2012, he became the premier defensive player in college football, winning the Ted Hendricks Award and setting school records with 13.0 sacks and 23.5 tackles for loss. He famously dismantled the Clemson offense, recording 4.5 sacks in a single game—a feat that tied a Clemson Memorial Stadium record held by Hall of Famers Ross Browner and Bruce Smith.
Clowney's professional journey with the Houston Texans began with a massive four-year, $22.2725 million contract in 2014. While his rookie season was hampered by a torn meniscus and microfracture surgery, he eventually found his rhythm, earning Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors by 2016. His career has since taken him through several franchises, including the Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans, before his eventual return to Houston in 2026.
