The athlete who walked away from football to study music production
In short: Jaelan Phillips is a first-round NFL draft pick, but his path to the gridiron was interrupted by a literal detour. After a series of injuries forced him to medically retire from college football, he traded his pads for a music production degree before returning to the sport.
In 2018, Jaelan Phillips' trajectory as a high-profile prospect hit a wall. Following his initial year at UCLA and a second year interrupted by a head injury, multiple mishaps—such as a moped collision with a vehicle—forced his medical withdrawal from the sport in December 2018. Rather than seeking a standard recovery path, Phillips pivoted to academia, enrolling at Los Angeles City College to study music production. He was the premier high school prospect from the 2017 class. During his time at Redlands East Valley High School, he recorded 264 tackles. He also tallied 31.5 sacks and three interceptions. These stats helped him secure over 20 scholarship offers.
His return to the sport was not a simple comeback but a deliberate, multi-institutional journey. He moved to the University of Miami's Frost School of Music during 2019. This move allowed him to pursue his interest in music while simultaneously attempting to reclaim his football career. After sitting out the 2019 season due to NCAA transfer rules, he returned to the field in 2020, eventually earning second-team All-American honors and becoming a finalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award. He played for the UCLA Bruins for two seasons. He also spent two years with the Miami Hurricanes. In 2020, he recorded eight sacks and one interception. He was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team.
The transition from student-musician back to professional athlete culminated in the 2021 NFL Draft, where he was selected 18th overall by the Miami Dolphins. Despite a career marked by significant physical setbacks—including a torn Achilles tendon in 2023 and a knee injury in 2024—Phillips has maintained a high level of production. By 2025, he had secured a $120 million contract with the Carolina Panthers, illustrating a rare narrative of academic pivot and athletic resilience. The Dolphins signed him to a four-year rookie deal on June 9, 2021. He was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles on November 3, 2025. This trade involved a 2026 third round pick. He recorded six tackles in his first game with Philadelphia.
