How a sports anchor captured the viral moment that confirmed a global celebrity romance
In short: Jarrett Payton, a former professional running back and son of NFL legend Walter Payton, spent years navigating the gridiron before finding a different kind of spotlight. In 2023, his quick thinking as a sports reporter produced the first visual confirmation of a high-profile relationship that captivated the entire world.
Born in 1980, Jarrett Payton followed a path through high school football and the University of Miami, where he earned MVP honors at the 2004 Orange Bowl. His professional career spanned the NFL, NFL Europe—where he won World Bowl XIII with the Amsterdam Admirals—and the CFL. Throughout his playing days, he often navigated the shadow of his father, Walter Payton, even choosing jersey number 33 with the Tennessee Titans because his father’s iconic number 34 was already retired.
After retiring from professional play, Payton transitioned into broadcasting, eventually becoming a sports anchor for WGN-TV in Chicago. It was in this role on September 24, 2023, that he secured his place in pop culture history. While covering a Chicago Bears game at Arrowhead Stadium, Payton filmed a four-second clip of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce leaving the venue together. Despite requests from stadium security to delete the footage, he posted the video to X, where it garnered over 15 million views in just 24 hours, providing the first definitive visual evidence of the couple's relationship.
Beyond his media career, Payton has dedicated significant time to philanthropy, establishing the Jarrett Payton Foundation in 2011 to support youth through leadership academies and anti-bullying initiatives. He also maintains a deep connection to his family legacy, having delivered his father’s Pro Football Hall of Fame induction speech as a 12-year-old in 1993 and later inducting his father’s former teammate, Steve McMichael, into the same Hall of Fame in 2024. Today, he continues his work in Chicago sports media, balancing his professional commitments with his ongoing charitable efforts.
