The kicker who broke a fifty-year record with ten extra points
In short: In a sport defined by razor-thin margins, Jason Sanders achieved the impossible. While most kickers focus on long-range field goals, Sanders rewrote the NFL record books by converting ten extra points in a single game, shattering a mark that had stood since 1966.
Jason Sanders' career is a study in specialized precision. After playing for the New Mexico Lobos from 2014 to 2017, the American placekicker entered the NFL in 2018 as a seventh-round pick for the Miami Dolphins. He quickly transitioned from a prospect touted by coach Brent Grablachoff to a cornerstone of the Miami franchise, eventually becoming the team's longest-tenured player during his eight-season stint.
His statistical peaks are marked by historic consistency. In 2020, Sanders shared the scoring title with Daniel Carlson and Younghoe Koo, earning First-team All-Pro honors after a season where he converted 36 of 39 field goals. His most remarkable feat, however, occurred in 2022. During a 70–20 victory against the Denver Broncos, Sanders successfully converted 10 extra point attempts in a single game, breaking a record of nine attempts that had remained untouched since 1966.
Beyond the numbers, Sanders provided rare moments of versatility. In a Week 13 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, he recorded his first career receiving touchdown by catching a one-yard pass from punter Matt Haack. This play was notable not just for the kicker's involvement, but because it represented the first touchdown pass caught by a kicker in the NFL since October 16, 1977. Despite facing injuries, such as a hip injury that sidelined him in 2025, his impact on the game's scoring mechanics remains a significant chapter in recent NFL history.
