From Cairns to the Queensland Cup: The resilient career of Jayden Hodges
In short: Born in Cairns, Indigenous Australian Jayden Hodges has navigated the highs and lows of professional rugby league. From making his NRL debut with the North Queensland Cowboys to captaining the Mackay Cutters, his journey is a testament to persistence through injury and competition in the professional ranks.
Jayden Hodges, born on 9 October 1993 in Cairns, Queensland, has established himself as a professional rugby league footballer, primarily operating in the hooker position. His professional trajectory began in the junior ranks with the Cairns Kangaroos, which eventually led to him being signed by the North Queensland Cowboys. He is part of a significant rugby league lineage, being the cousin of former Brisbane Broncos player Justin Hodges.
Hodges' career has been marked by significant milestones and setbacks. After playing for the Cowboys' NYC team in 2012 and 2013, he made his NRL debut for North Queensland in Round 25 of the 2013 season against the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. After signing a three-year deal with the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles for 2014, his first match for the club occurred in Round 17 of that season versus the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. During that season, he scored his first NRL try in a sudden death Semi-final loss at the Sydney Football Stadium.
The challenges of professional sport were evident in 2016 when a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ended his Auckland Nines tournament and his season. Despite such setbacks, Hodges continued to find success in various competitions. He won the Bob Batty Best and Fairest Award and was named Players' Player for Manly's New South Wales Cup side in 2015. Since then, he has played for the Mackay Cutters, where he played 43 games between 2018 and 2020, and the Northern Pride, where he served as joint co-captain in 2021. He currently competes for the Townsville Blackhawks.
