In short: In 1990, Jeff Hostetler was ready to retire and head home. Instead, a teammate's injury thrust him into the spotlight for the New York Giants, leading to a Super Bowl XXV championship and a career defined by clutch postseason performances.

Jeff Hostetler's NFL journey was defined by his role as a high-stakes replacement. After spending several seasons as a third-string quarterback for the New York Giants, Hostetler was prepared to retire at the end of 1990. However, a severe foot injury to starter Phil Simms during a Week 15 game against the Buffalo Bills changed his trajectory. Hostetler led the Giants to two victories, including a win over the New England Patriots, securing a first-round bye and a 13–3 record.

His most significant achievement came in Super Bowl XXV, where Hostetler led the Giants to a 20–19 victory over the heavily favored Buffalo Bills. He completed 20 of 32 passes for 222 yards and one touchdown. Despite the victory, his tenure with the Giants was marked by volatility; while he won the starting job in 1991, a broken back during his twelfth start that season ended his momentum.

Hostetler later found success with the Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders, leading them to a 10–6 record and a playoff victory over the Denver Broncos in 1993—the last Los Angeles playoff game until 2017. He also earned a Pro Bowl selection in 1994. Interestingly, Hostetler's career is noted for his extraordinary postseason efficiency. In five playoff games, he achieved a 4–1 record, throwing seven touchdowns with zero interceptions, maintaining a 112.0 passer rating.

Beyond his on-field statistics, Hostetler's career is tied to significant football history. His decision not to sign with the St. Louis Rams in 1999 left a vacancy that eventually helped facilitate the rise of Kurt Warner, a future Hall of Famer, during the 'Greatest Show on Turf' era.
