How an electrical supply store manager became an NFL Super Bowl champion
In short: In 1998, Jeff Saturday was working as a manager at an electrical supply store in Raleigh, North Carolina. After being cut by the Baltimore Ravens without playing a single game, the undrafted center had to fight for a second chance. His journey from retail worker to NFL Pro Bowler is a masterclass in persistence.
Saturday's path to professional stardom was anything but linear. After being waived by the Baltimore Ravens in June 1998, he returned to North Carolina to work at an electrical supply store. His return to the NFL was only made possible by a recommendation from former college teammate Nate Hobgood-Chittick, who convinced Colts executive Bill Polian that Saturday was a talent worth testing. Despite being considered too short for the SEC by some coaches, he earned a scholarship to the University of North Carolina. This academic and athletic success eventually led to his professional opportunities.
Once signed by Indianapolis in January 1999, Saturday became the anchor of the Colts' offensive line. He started 85 consecutive games between 2000 and 2004, helping the team maintain one of the league's most efficient pass protections. His professional peak occurred in 2007; after defeating the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship, he assisted the Colts in beating the Chicago Bears for Super Bowl XLI. He was a six-time Pro Bowl selection throughout his career. Additionally, he was recognised as a first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection during his collegiate years.
Beyond his physical play, Saturday's influence extended into the boardroom and the sidelines. He served as a key negotiator for the 2011 Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NFL and the NFLPA. In 2022, he drew significant attention when appointed as the Colts' interim head coach, becoming the first NFL leader lacking college or pro coaching experience since Norm Van Brocklin in 1961. He has also worked as a sports analyst for ESPN since 2013. Furthermore, he was inducted into the Indianapolis Colts Ring of Honor in 2015.
