In short: Jeff Monken's journey to leading the Army Black Knights was anything but linear. Before reaching the heights of Division I FBS, he navigated a winding path through high school coaching, graduate assistant roles, and a transformative tenure at Georgia Southern, eventually breaking long-standing historical droughts at West Point.

Jeff Monken's coaching career is defined by a long-standing professional partnership with Paul Johnson. After graduating from Millikin University in 1989, Monken began his career as a graduate assistant at Hawaii, where he first worked under Johnson. This collaboration continued through various roles at Georgia Southern, the Naval Academy, and Georgia Tech, establishing the foundation for Monken's eventual rise to head coaching.

Monken's initial head coaching position was at J. Sterling Morton High School during 1995. After a brief stint at Concordia, he returned to Johnson at Georgia Southern in 1997. His success at the collegiate level peaked during his leadership of the Georgia Southern Eagles from 2010 to 2013. During this period, he secured two Southern Conference championships and led the team to three consecutive FCS Semifinal appearances.

Since becoming the Army Black Knights' 37th head coach in December 2013, Monken has led a major program revival. His 2018 season was particularly historic, marking the first time the Black Knights achieved three consecutive bowl appearances and consecutive 10-win seasons. This performance led to the program's first Lambert Trophy since the 1958 squad led by Earl 'Red' Blaik, while also securing the team's highest final poll rankings in decades.

Monken's influence extends through a significant coaching lineage; he is the cousin of Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken, and his family includes several members who have coached at high school, college, and professional levels.
