In short: In 2001, the California Golden Bears won just one game. By 2002, they had achieved the nation's biggest turnaround, earning their head coach a conference Coach of the Year award and sparking a decade of record-breaking success and rising ticket sales.

Jeff Tedford's tenure at the University of California, Berkeley, is a study in dramatic volatility. Inheriting a program that had not seen a winning season since 1993, Tedford immediately revitalized the Golden Bears. In his first year in 2002, he led the team to a 7–5 record, earning Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors. This resurgence saw Cal rise as high as No. 2 in the nation in 2007, its highest ranking since 1951.

The success was not merely on the field; it translated to the stands. Season ticket sales surged from 16,200 in 2002 to 41,336 by 2007, setting new records annually between 2004 and 2007. Tedford became a cornerstone of the program, eventually becoming the school's all-time leader in victories, surpassing Andy Smith with his 75th win in 2011. He departed California as the program's leader in total wins, games coached, and bowl victories.

However, the era was marked by significant highs and lows. While Tedford developed numerous NFL talents, including eight first-round picks, the program faced academic scrutiny. During his tenure, the graduation rate for football players who entered between 2002 and 2005 was 48 percent, the lowest in the Pac-12. Following a 3–9 campaign and a difficult stretch between 2010 and 2012, Tedford was dismissed, even though $6.9 million remained on his three-year contract.

Tedford's career is defined by these extremes: the rapid ascent from a one-win season to national prominence, and the eventual decline that led to his dismissal.
