From high school walk-on to architect of a college football dynasty
In short: Jeff Traylor’s journey to the head coaching seat at UTSA is a masterclass in steady ascent. By blending elite high school success with high-level collegiate recruiting, he transformed a program into a conference champion in just his first year as a head coach.
Traylor’s professional trajectory is defined by a deep roots in Texas football. After graduating from Gilmer High School in 1986 and attending Stephen F. Austin State University as a walk-on, he spent years honing his craft in the high school ranks. His tenure at Jacksonville High School (1993–1999) allowed him to develop talent for the NFL, including quarterbacks Josh and Luke McCown. However, it was his 15-year return to Gilmer High School that cemented his reputation.
There, he achieved a staggering .871 winning percentage, leading the Buckeyes to three state titles and five championship appearances. His impact was so significant that the school renamed its stadium in his honor in 2015. Transitioning to the collegiate level, Traylor became a powerhouse in talent acquisition. While at the University of Texas at Austin starting in 2015, he was instrumental in securing the No.
7-ranked recruiting class in the country for two consecutive years, earning him the title of Big 12 Recruiter of the Year. This ability to identify and develop elite talent served as the bridge between his high school success and his eventual leadership roles at Southern Methodist University and the University of Arkansas. In December 2019, Traylor took the helm at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). The results were immediate and historic. In 2021, he guided the Roadrunners to an 11-1 regular season start—the best in program history—and secured the team's first-ever conference championship by defeating Western Kentucky 49-41. His 12-2 final record in 2021 underscored his ability to translate decades of coaching experience into a winning culture at the university level.
