Can a losing record belong to the inventor of the game?
In short: The University of Kansas basketball program is a powerhouse of North American prestige, boasting 105 winning seasons and 63 conference titles. Yet, its very first head coach—the man who actually invented basketball—is the only coach in the program's history to finish with a losing record.
Founded in 1898 following the arrival of Dr. James Naismith, the Jayhawks program has become one of the most decorated in history. While Naismith's tenure was marked by a 55–60 record, his legacy lives on through a massive coaching tree. His former player, Forrest "Phog" Allen, became the "father of basketball coaching," leading the team for 39 seasons and amassing a 590–219 record. Allen's influence was so vast that he mentored future Hall of Famers like Adolph Rupp and Dean Smith, and was a driving force in getting basketball included in the 1936 Olympics. Since the program's inception, the Jayhawks have established a standard of dominance. They hold the NCAA record for 28 consecutive tournament appearances and have achieved the most winning seasons in Division I history, totaling 105.
Their home court advantage at Allen Fieldhouse is legendary; since its opening in 1955, the team has won over 87 percent of its games, losing only 118 contests in 69 years. This success is not merely about wins, but about the caliber of talent produced. The program has seen legends like Wilt Chamberlain and Clyde Lovellette pass through its ranks. No other player has achieved what Lovellette did during his 1952 campaign: topping the national scoring charts while guiding his squad to a championship title. Today, the program continues to dominate the Big 12, holding a record 412–102 record in conference play.
The Jayhawks' history is also defined by high-stakes preservation. In 2010, Kansas alumnus David Booth purchased James Naismith's original 13 rules of basketball at a Sotheby's auction for $4.3 million, ensuring the founding document of the sport returned to the Lawrence campus.
