In short: A goalkeeper's career is often defined by moments of sudden opportunity. For Lee Grant, these moments arrived through injuries to others, leading him from the training pitches of Watford to the heights of the Premier League and European competition.

Born in 1983, Lee Grant's professional ascent was marked by both rapid rises and frustrating setbacks. Having entered Derby County's academy in 2000, his Football League debut occurred in September 2002 versus Burnley, substituting for the wounded Andy Oakes. This debut season was a breakthrough; Grant won Derby's Young Player of the Year award after playing 30 games and earned a place in the England under-21 squad. Before his professional breakthrough, he spent time training with Watford's fanzine football team. He also secured a three-and-a-half-year contract extension with the Rams in early 2004.

However, his path was rarely linear. He faced intense competition for starting roles, notably from Lee Camp at Derby and Stephen Bywater, and suffered various injuries, including a fractured metatarsal in 2005. Despite these hurdles, Grant proved his reliability. He became a mainstay for Sheffield Wednesday, playing 136 consecutive matches and winning the PFA Fans' Championship Player of the Month in 2008–09. His resilience was tested by a shoulder injury requiring surgery in 2005. He also navigated a loan spell at Burnley to gain more experience.

Grant's career eventually took him to the top flight. A permanent move occurred in January 2017 following his 2016 loan arrival at Stoke City. His performances earned him Stoke's player of the year award during the 2016–17 season. This momentum carried him to Manchester United in July 2018, where he made his European debut in a 2019 UEFA Europa League match against Astana. Today, the veteran goalkeeper has transitioned into coaching, serving as the head coach for Walsall. During his time at Old Trafford, he was assigned the number 13 shirt. He has since moved into management, currently leading Walsall in League Two.
