From 170 centimeters to an international basketball star
In short: Before he was an NCAA standout and an NBL champion, Lee Hyun-jung was a small guard focused on dribbling. A massive growth spurt transformed his game, leading him from South Korean high schools to the global stage, eventually earning him MVP honors in the Japanese B.League.
The trajectory of Lee Hyun-junction's career is defined by a remarkable physical transformation. During his middle school years, Lee stood only 170 centimeters (5 ft 7 in) tall, playing a guard role centered on mid-range shooting and ball handling. However, by the end of middle school, he had grown to over 190 centimeters (6 ft 3 in), allowing him to transition into a hybrid player who utilized his size as a center on defense while maintaining guard skills on offense, modeling his style after Klay Thompson.
His path to professional basketball was paved through international development. After attending Samil Commercial School in Suwon under his father's coaching, Lee moved to Australia in 2018 to join the NBA Global Academy. This period was crucial for his linguistic and athletic development, as he attended Lake Ginninderra Secondary College to learn English while competing in the SEABL and NBL1 leagues. His talent eventually caught the eye of Bob McKillop, leading him to become the second South Korean man to play NCAA Division I basketball for the Davidson Wildcats.
Lee's collegiate career at Davidson was marked by rapid statistical growth and efficiency. In 2020–21, no Wildcat before him had reached such shooting marks: hitting 50 percent of field goals, 40 percent of threes, and 90 percent of free throws. His accolades continued through his junior year, where he earned first-team All-Atlantic 10 honors after a 32-point performance against Charlotte in December 2021.
Since leaving college, Lee has navigated the global basketball landscape, playing for the Santa Cruz Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, and San Antonio Spurs in various capacities. His success in the Australian NBL with the Illawarra Hawks, including a 2025 championship, preceded his move to the Japanese B.League. In July 2025, he joined Nagasaki Velca, where he secured both a championship and the tournament MVP title.
