From Premier League stardom to non-league journeyman and mental health advocate
In short: Lee Hendrie’s football career was a rollercoaster of highs and lows. After winning Aston Villa's Young Player of the Season, he experienced the heights of international caps and the depths of bankruptcy and mental health struggles, eventually finding new purpose as a pundit and mentor.
Born in Solihull on 18 May 1977, Lee Hendrie enjoyed a significant tenure at Aston Villa, where he spent fourteen years. His talent was evident early; he was named the club's Young Player of the Season for the 1997–98 season. Hendrie also reached the international stage, earning a full England cap against the Czech Republic on 18 November 1998 at age 21, alongside appearances for the England U21 and England B sides. He also featured in the 2000 FA Cup Final while playing for Villa. His international experience included representing the England B side in 1998.
However, his career was marked by significant volatility. Outside football, he endured private struggles, such as a Porsche crash and a 27 January 2012 High Court bankruptcy ruling by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs. During this difficult time, Hendrie revealed he had twice attempted to take his own life. His personal challenges were compounded by a high-profile car accident involving his Porsche. These difficulties occurred while his manager, Graham Taylor, managed various disciplinary issues.
His career was a vast journey, moving from the Premier League to Bandung in the Indonesian Liga Primer Indonesia, making him the initial player with Premier League history to join a club there. After a long period as a journeyman in English non-league football—playing for clubs like Kidderminster Harriers, Daventry Town, and Redditch United—he transitioned into media and entrepreneurship. Today, he is a Sky Sports pundit and a director at FootieBugs, a football activity company for children. He has also gained recognition for his openness regarding his mental health struggles, notably appearing on the ITV show Harry's Heroes. His diverse playing history included stints with clubs such as Stoke City and Sheffield United. He also appeared as a player in the Apple TV series Ted Lasso.
