From college football coach to ESPN icon: the colorful career of Lee Corso
In short: Before he was wearing mascot heads on national television, Lee Corso was a defensive specialist and a college head coach. His journey from the sidelines of major universities to the center stage of ESPN's College GameDay is a remarkable tale of resilience and sporting passion.
Lee Corso's career is defined by a transition from the intense pressure of coaching to the playful energy of sports broadcasting. Prior to his 1987–2025 tenure on ESPN's College GameDay, Corso managed various college football teams as a head coach. He led the University of Louisville from 1969 to 1972, Indiana University from 1973 to 1982, and Northern Illinois University in 1984. His professional coaching journey also included a stint with the Orlando Renegades of the USFL in 1985.
His time at Indiana University was marked by both highs and lows. In 1979, he led the Hoosiers to a 7–4 regular season and a victory over BYU in the Holiday Bowl, propelling the team to a top-20 UPI ranking. However, his tenure was also marked by a curious moment in 1976 when he called a timeout just to capture a team photograph with a scoreboard showing Indiana leading Ohio State 7–6. The lead was short-lived, as Ohio State eventually won the game 47–7.
Beyond the sidelines, Corso became a cultural phenomenon through his 'headgear selection' ritual. Starting in October 1996, he began wearing the mascot head of his predicted winner to close each show. By his final appearance on August 30, 2025, he had made 431 such selections, finishing with an impressive .666 winning record. Even after a stroke in 2009 that required intensive rehabilitation and changed his broadcasting style, Corso's influence on college football remained profound until his retirement.
