How a quiet struggle with stuttering shaped a rising football star's career
In short: Lutsharel Geertruida is a versatile force for the Netherlands and RB Leipzig, but his early professional years were defined by a choice of silence. Due to a severe stutter, the Dutch defender avoided the cameras and interviews, focusing instead on a rapid ascent through Europe's elite footballing ranks.
Born in Rotterdam on 18 July 2000, Geertruida's journey from the youth academies of Sparta Rotterdam and Feyenoord to the international stage is marked by remarkable versatility. Capable of playing as a right-back, centre-back, or defensive midfielder, he has become a vital asset for the Netherlands national team and various top-tier clubs.
His professional rise was rapid. After making his debut for Feyenoord in October 2017, he transitioned from a substitute to an integral squad member. By the 2022–23 season, he was a key part of the Feyenoord team that secured the Eredivisie title. His individual accolades include multiple Eredivisie Team of the Month honors, notably spanning from September 2020 through February 2024.
Geertruida's career has also seen significant movement across Europe's major leagues. Following a successful stint in the Netherlands, he transferred to the Bundesliga club RB Leipzig in August 2024 for approximately €20 million on a five-year deal. His career has been characterized by high-stakes competition, including appearing in the UEFA Conference League final in May 2022 and representing the Netherlands in major tournaments like the UEFA Nations League and Euro 2024.
Despite his growing fame, Geertruida has navigated personal challenges with discretion. During his formative years at Feyenoord, his struggle with severe stuttering led him to decline media interviews to avoid the spotlight, a decision made in consultation with his club.
