From teen sitcom star to film producer, the multifaceted career of Marques Houston
In short: Marques Houston has spent over three decades in the spotlight, evolving from a child star in the R&B group Immature to a prolific solo artist and filmmaker. Beyond his musical achievements and iconic television roles, his life has been marked by significant personal transitions, including his conversion to Jehovah's Witnesses.
Born in Los Angeles in 1981, Houston launched his career in 1990 as a founding member of the R&B group Immature, later known as IMx. While the group achieved success with soundtracks and albums, Houston simultaneously carved out a path in acting. He is perhaps best remembered by television audiences for his role as Roger Evans on the hit sitcom Sister, Sister, a character he portrayed for five seasons during the 1990s. His early film credits include the animated Bebe's Kids and the House Party series, where he appeared alongside his bandmates.
Transitioning into adulthood, Houston pursued a solo music career starting in 2003 with his debut album, MH. His discography expanded over the following two decades, featuring hits like 'Clubbin'' and 'Pop That Booty,' and culminating in his 2022 album, Me. His acting career also remained active, with roles in films like You Got Served and the horror sequel Somebody Help Me 2. By 2010, Houston began shifting his focus behind the camera, partnering with manager Chris Stokes to establish the production company Footage Films.
Today, Houston serves as the CEO of Footage Films, where he writes and executive produces made-for-TV features. His transition into filmmaking has been prolific, with over ten writing and producing credits to his name, including the 2017 theatrical release 'Til Death Do Us Part. Outside of his professional life, Houston’s personal choices have drawn public attention, particularly his 2020 marriage to Miya Dickey. The couple, who met at a convention for Jehovah's Witnesses in 2018, have faced scrutiny regarding their 19-year age gap, which Houston has publicly defended. Since 2016, Houston has been a member of Jehovah's Witnesses, a faith that has become a central part of his life.
