From Green Bay to Los Angeles: The journeyman career of Marquez Valdes-Scantling
In short: Born on October 10, 1994, Marquez Valdes-Scantling has navigated a decade-long career across the NFL. From his early breakout with the Green Bay Packers to securing two Super Bowl rings with the Kansas City Chiefs, his path highlights the relentless volatility and high-stakes nature of professional football rosters.
Marquez Reshard Valdes-Scantling, often known as MVS, began his professional journey after being selected 174th overall by the Green Bay Packers in the 2018 NFL draft. His rookie season served as a rapid introduction to the league, where he quickly moved from a kick returner to a starting receiver, finishing the year with 581 receiving yards. His tenure in Green Bay was marked by both high-impact performances and intense scrutiny, including a difficult period in 2020 when he received death threats following a fumble in an overtime loss against the Indianapolis Colts.
In 2022, Valdes-Scantling transitioned to the Kansas City Chiefs on a three-year, $30 million contract. This era proved to be the most decorated of his career, as he contributed to back-to-back championships in Super Bowl LVII and Super Bowl LVIII. Despite his role in these victories, his statistical output fluctuated, and he was released by the Chiefs in February 2024. This marked the beginning of a nomadic phase in his career, characterized by short-term stints with multiple organizations.
Following his departure from Kansas City, Valdes-Scantling experienced a rapid succession of team changes. Between 2024 and 2026, he signed with the Buffalo Bills, New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Dallas Cowboys. These moves often involved navigating practice squads and active roster promotions, reflecting the precarious nature of professional sports employment. By September 2026, he had joined the Los Angeles Chargers, continuing a career defined by adaptability and the constant demand to prove his value in new systems.
