The first man to run and pass 500 yards in a game
In short: Before the modern era of explosive dual-threat quarterbacks, Marques Tuiasosopo rewrote the record books at the University of Washington. In 1999, he became the first player in NCAA history to surpass 300 passing yards and 200 rushing yards in a single game, signaling a shift in how college offenses were designed.
Born in Long Beach and raised in Woodinville, Tuiasosopo was a versatile athlete who was actually drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 28th round of the 1997 MLB draft. Despite his baseball pedigree, he chose to pursue football at the University of Washington. His decision was largely driven by head coach Jim Lambright, who was one of the few programs willing to let him play quarterback rather than his primary recruitment position of safety.
His collegiate career was defined by rapid ascension. As a true freshman in 1997, he was thrust into a nationally televised game against the sixth-ranked Nebraska team due to an injury to starter Brock Huard. He performed admirably, throwing for 270 yards and two touchdowns.
Tuiasosopo's peak arrived in 2000, when he led the Huskies to a Pac-10 title and a 34–24 Rose Bowl win over Purdue. During that season, he also secured a landmark victory over the #4 Miami Hurricanes—the only loss of Miami's season—earning him an eighth-place finish in Heisman Trophy voting. He eventually transitioned to the NFL, where he spent eight seasons as a quarterback for the Oakland Raiders and New York Jets before embarking on a diverse coaching career spanning several major universities and the Detroit Lions.
His legacy is also one of family achievement. He is part of a prominent sports dynasty: his father, Manu, was a Super Bowl XIX winner; his brother Zach played for the Philadelphia Eagles; and his sister Leslie Gabriel served as the head coach for the Washington Huskies volleyball team as of 2024.
