In short: In 1999, a disputed foul in a domestic championship ignited riots that would fundamentally alter the trajectory of Mauritian football. This singular moment of civil unrest led to an eighteen-month suspension of all local play, marking a definitive turning point for the nation's presence on the international stage.

The Mauritius national team, known as Club M or Les Dodos, experienced a period of regional dominance in the mid-20th century. Between 1947 and 1963, they won the Indian Ocean Games Triangulaire ten times. Their first competitive international match occurred in 1947 against Réunion, which they secured with a 2–1 victory. This era established them as a regional power before they began broader competition against other nations starting in 1967.

The turning point arrived in 1999 following deadly riots caused by supporters of Scouts Club (now Port Louis Sporting Club). The unrest was sparked by a controversial penalty awarded to Fire Brigade Sports Club, resulting in a 1–0 win. In the aftermath, all domestic football was suspended for 18 months, with only the national team permitted to play. This event is widely cited as the moment Mauritian football began a significant downward slope both domestically and internationally.

The decline became quantifiable in the new millennium. From a FIFA ranking of 116th in 2000, the team tumbled to an all-time low of 195th by the summer of 2011. While they achieved a peak in 2003 by winning the Indian Ocean Island Games on home soil and defeating South Africa 2–0 in January 2004, subsequent years were marked by frequent coaching changes and a lack of official wins.

Recent history shows a volatile struggle for consistency. In 2017, the team saw its best results in a decade by defeating Mozambique and Rwanda. However, they have faced repeated setbacks in recent AFCoN qualifiers, including four consecutive unsuccessful attempts to reach the group stage between 2017 and 2025.
