A childhood injury nearly ended his mobility, yet he became an NBA defensive legend.
In short: Born in 1956, Michael Cooper suffered a severe knee injury at age three that doctors predicted would leave him unable to walk. He defied those odds to become a cornerstone of the Lakers' Showtime era, eventually earning a spot in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Michael Cooper's path to basketball prominence began in Los Angeles, where he overcame a childhood accident that required 100 stitches in his knee. After graduating from Pasadena High School in 1974 and playing at the University of New Mexico, he was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1978. Throughout his entire twelve-year NBA career, he remained with the Lakers, serving as a vital defensive specialist during their championship runs in 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, and 1988.
Standing 6 ft 7 in tall, Cooper was known for his slender frame and signature knee-high socks. He was frequently tasked with guarding the opposing team's most dangerous perimeter threats, earning praise from Larry Bird as the toughest defender he ever encountered. His defensive prowess was recognized with eight selections to the NBA All-Defensive Team and the 1987 Defensive Player of the Year award. By the time he left the Lakers after the 1989–90 season, he ranked in the franchise's all-time top ten for categories including steals, blocks, and three-point field goals.
Following his playing days, Cooper transitioned into a prolific coaching career across multiple leagues. He led the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks to consecutive titles in 2001 and 2002 and later coached the Albuquerque Thunderbirds to a G League championship. His career has spanned various levels, from the NBA and WNBA to high school and collegiate programs. 21 jersey in 2025.
Beyond the court, Cooper has navigated significant personal challenges, including a 2014 diagnosis of early-stage tongue cancer, from which he successfully recovered. He continues to contribute to the sport, serving as the head coach for the men's basketball team at Cal State Los Angeles as of 2026. His journey from a childhood prognosis of permanent disability to a celebrated career as both a player and mentor remains a testament to his resilience.
