The Swedish pop star who scrapped five albums to find her true voice
In short: Before reaching the top of the Swedish charts, Zara Larsson endured a grueling four-year creative cycle. Between 2017 and 2021, she recorded and discarded several versions of her work, driven by a relentless refusal to settle for anything less than perfection.
Zara Larsson’s fifth studio album, *Midnight Sun*, released on 26 September 2025, is far more than a collection of dance-pop hits; it is the culmination of a long-term artistic evolution. The project was born from a period of intense self-scrutiny. Following her 2017 album *So Good*, Larsson experienced a four-year stretch where she reportedly scrapped as many as five different album iterations, unable to meet her own commercial and creative standards.
The album's sonic identity is deeply rooted in her Swedish heritage, specifically the atmosphere of a summer night that never ends. This 'Scandipop' aesthetic blends electropop, drum and bass, and even Brazilian funk. Working alongside longtime collaborator MNEK and producers like Margo XS and Zhone, Larsson sought to capture the 'European Hawaii' look—a blend of Scandinavian core and tropical fantasy.
While the album achieved massive commercial success—debuting at number one in Sweden and reaching the top ten in Norway—it also marked a significant personal milestone. Lyrically, the ten-track project moves away from the sound of her 2024 effort, *Venus*, to embrace more introspective themes of ambition, identity, and the 'messiness' of adult life. This vulnerability earned her critical acclaim, including a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Pop Recording.
The era continued into 2026 with the release of the remix album, *Midnight Sun: Girls Trip*, on 1 May. This expansion featured a heavy-hitting roster of collaborators, including Shakira, Robyn, and PinkPantheress, serving as a final chapter in her tenure with Epic Records before her transition to RCA Records later that year.
