From Egyptian prodigy to European star: the volatile rise of Mido
In short: In 2003, Mido became the most expensive Egyptian player ever after a €12 million move to Marseille. Yet, his career was defined as much by his explosive talent as by disciplinary clashes, from throwing scissors at teammates to public spats with managers across Europe's biggest leagues.
Born Ahmed Hossam Hussein Abdel Hamid Wasfi in 1983, Mido’s ascent began at Zamalek in Egypt. After a rapid rise, he moved to Gent in Belgium at age 17 in 2000. Despite initial homesickness, he developed a professional mentality, winning the Belgian Ebony Shoe as the best African player in the division in 2001. He made his professional debut for Zamalek in May 2000. During that same season, he helped the club reach the African Cup Winners' Cup final.
His talent earned him a five-year contract with Ajax in 2001, but his time in the Netherlands was marked by friction. He faced criticism from manager Ronald Koeman for his work ethic and was even relegated to the reserve team for disciplinary reasons. Tensions escalated in March 2003, when Mido admitted to throwing a pair of scissors at teammate Zlatan Ibrahimović during an argument. His struggles in the Netherlands also included a three-match suspension following a red card against Twente. Additionally, he once missed a match after a disagreement with manager Ronald Koeman.
Mido's journey through Europe's elite included a record-breaking €12 million move to Marseille in 2003 and a €6 million transfer to Roma in 2004. He later moved to Tottenham Hotspur, first on loan in 2005 and then permanently in 2006 for €6.75 million. Throughout his career, he was a prolific striker, notably scoring 19 goals in 51 appearances for Egypt before retiring in June 2013. Before his permanent move to North London, he had a brief loan spell at Celta Vigo. He also played for several other clubs, including Middlesbrough and Wigan Athletic.
Despite his technical capabilities, Mido's career was often complicated by personal disputes. He faced criticism from managers like Koeman and Martin Jol, and even experienced a dressing room confrontation involving Roma's Rosella Sensi that required security intervention. His tenure at Tottenham was not without controversy, as he was once labelled disrespectful by Martin Jol. He also faced verbal abuse from certain sections of the fanbase during his time in England.
