The leg-spin specialist who conquered the world and endured a historic Test setback
In short: Mitchell Swepson’s career is a study in extreme highs and lows. From winning a T20 World Cup to recording the most expensive bowling figures in Australian Test history, the Queensland leg-spinner has navigated the volatile highs and lows of international cricket with remarkable resilience.
Born on 4 October 1993, Mitchell Joseph Swepson has become a prominent figure in Australian domestic and international cricket. A specialist leg-spin bowler, his professional journey began in earnest during late 2015, making his List A debut for the Cricket Australia XI on 5 October and his first-class debut shortly after on 29 October against New Zealanders. By early 2016, he had entered the Twenty20 arena with the Brisbane Heat.
Swepson's rise to the international stage was marked by steady inclusion in various squads. After being named to Test squads for series against India in 2017 and 2020, and South Africa in early 2021, he finally made his T20I debut against England on 27 June 2018. His success in the shorter formats culminated in his selection for the Australian squad that secured the 2021 T20 World Cup title.
However, his Test career has been defined by a striking duality. While he finally earned his Test cap in March 2022 during a series against Pakistan, that debut included a difficult second innings where he conceded 156 runs without taking a wicket. This performance of 0/156 from 53.4 overs surpassed Bryce McGain’s previous record of 0/149. Despite this statistical outlier, Swepson has remained a versatile asset, even replacing Steve Smith in the ODI squad during the same 2022 tour of Pakistan.
His ability to perform under pressure is further evidenced by his domestic achievements, such as taking a hat-trick during the 2019–20 Sheffield Shield season against Victoria in November 2019. Whether finding the breakthrough or enduring a heavy scoring session, Swepson remains a central figure in the Australian bowling rotation.
