The musical lineage behind one of India's most-streamed romantic hits
In short: Mithoon's rise to the top of Hindi cinema wasn't a solo feat; it was the culmination of a deep musical dynasty. From his grandfather’s thousands of students to his father’s work on over 200 movies, Mithoon carries a legacy that shaped the very sound of Indian film music.
Mithun Sharma, professionally known as Mithoon, is a prominent Indian composer and lyricist whose career is rooted in a prestigious musical lineage. A significant teacher, Pandit Ram Prasad Sharma (his grandfather), provided musical instruction to thousands of students who currently hold prominent positions within the field. His father, Naresh Sharma, was a master of musical arrangements who collaborated with nearly all top composers across more than 200 movies. Notably, his father and uncle Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma formed one-half of the legendary Laxmikant–Pyarelal composer duo.
Mithoon began his formal training at age eleven. Because his father was constantly occupied with professional commitments, Mithoon was sent to various experts for instruction while his father closely monitored his progress. He broke into the industry with recreations like 'Woh Lamhe' and 'Aadat,' but achieved a significant milestone in 2006 when director Onir commissioned him for an electro-based title track for 'Bas Ek Pal.' This success paved the way for original compositions that remain popular today, such as those for the film 'Anwar' released in 2007.
His commercial peak arrived with the 2013 film 'Aashiqui 2,' where his song 'Tum Hi Ho' won a Filmfare Award for Best Music Director. He also holds the distinction of launching Arijit Singh’s career in 2011 with the song 'Phir Mohabbat.' Beyond mainstream cinema, Mithoon has expanded his reach globally, traveling to the United Kingdom to collaborate with the Philharmonic Orchestra for his 2009 album 'Tu Hi Mere Rab Ki Tarah Hai.' His work continues to be a staple of Indian pop culture, spanning dozens of high-profile film scores.
His influence is measured not just in awards—including the Global Indian Music Academy Award for 'Most Streamed Song of 2016' for 'Sanam Re'—but in his ability to blend traditional roots with modern production. From guest composing for non-movie albums to scoring massive blockbusters like 'Kabir Singh' and 'Radhe Shyam,' Mithoon represents a bridge between the classical pedagogy of the past and the digital streaming era of the present.
