In short: In 2017, Mitchell Robinson did something unprecedented. Instead of playing for a university, he withdrew from his commitment to Western Kentucky to spend an entire year training in isolation. This high-stakes gamble on himself eventually led to an NBA championship and a place in the record books.

Mitchell Robinson’s path to the NBA was defined by a unique period of self-reliance. After initially committing to Texas A&M and later following coach Rick Stansbury to Western Kentucky University, Robinson made the radical decision in September 2018 to forgo college entirely. He became the first recruited prospect to spend a full year without playing for any high school, college, or professional team before entering the NBA draft. This period of solo training was a significant departure from the traditional development path for five-star recruits.

His physical profile made him a defensive phenomenon. Standing 7 feet tall with a 7 foot 4 inch wingspan, Robinson was often described as the premier shot blocker of his generation. His impact was most visible in his efficiency and rebounding; during the 2019–20 season, he broke Wilt Chamberlain's record for the highest field goal percentage in a single season. However, his game was also defined by extreme statistical polarities. While he holds the highest offensive rebounding rates in NBA history, he also holds the record for the lowest career free throw percentage in the league.

Despite being a target for the 'Hack-a-Mische' strategy due to his struggles from the free-throw line—including a 29.3% mark in the playoffs—Robinson's defensive presence was vital to team success. This culminated in 2026, when he helped the New York Knicks secure their first NBA title in 53 years. After a career spent primarily with the Knicks, Robinson eventually signed with the Boston Celtics in July 2026.
