In short: In 2000, researchers traveled to the Mongolian steppes to capture the lived experiences of its people. This footage, featuring an interview with R. Burmaa regarding women's organizations, offers a rare, unedited glimpse into the social landscape of the country as it prepared for a major museum exhibition.
During the summer of 2000, Dr. Paula L.W. Sabloff, accompanied by Tom Gillern and Heather Marshall, conducted extensive interviews across Mongolia. Their goal was to document contemporary nomadic life and social structures to support the Penn Museum exhibition, 'Modern Mongolia: Reclaiming Genghis Khan,' which launched the following year.
The collection includes raw, unedited footage and onsite metadata. Among these recordings is a specific interview with R. Burmaa, who discusses the role and impact of non-governmental and women's organizations in Mongolia during this transitional period.
