Documenting nomadic life in Mongolia at the turn of the millennium

Mongolia, Interview with Old Woman Herder Pensioner (2000) · 24:08 · Video: Penn Museum · Watch at the source

In short: In 2000, researchers captured unedited footage of Mongolian nomads to provide a contemporary view of life on the steppes. This archive offers a rare, ground-level perspective on the daily experiences of herders and pensioners during a period of national transition.

During the summer of 2000, Dr. Paula L.W. Sabloff led a team including Tom Gillern and Heather Marshall to Mongolia. Using mini DV cameras, they recorded interviews and scenes of nomadic life to support the upcoming Penn Museum exhibition, Modern Mongolia: Reclaiming Genghis Khan, which launched in 2001.

The footage captures diverse voices, including an interview with an elderly woman who is a pensioner. These sessions provide an unfiltered look at the living conditions of herders, specifically showcasing the interior of a traditional ger, offering a snapshot of Mongolian lifestyle as it existed at the start of the 21st century.
