How a Canadian quarterback broke a record held since 1969
In short: In 2025, Nathan Rourke achieved what few thought possible: surpassing a legendary milestone set over half a century ago. From a high school standout in Alabama to the CFL's Most Outstanding Player, his journey is a masterclass in resilience and precision.
Nathan Rourke's ascent in professional football is defined by a remarkable 2025 season. During that campaign, he surpassed the single-season passing yardage record for a Canadian player, a mark of 3,641 yards that had been held by Russ Jackson since 1969. Rourke's performance was characterized by extreme efficiency; he finished the season with 5,290 passing yards and 31 touchdowns, while maintaining a league-leading passer rating of 112.2 among starters. He achieved this feat by recording 352 completions. His statistical dominance also saw him finish second in the league for both passing yards and touchdowns.
His path to the top was not a straight line. After playing college football for the Ohio Bobcats, where he led the team to three consecutive bowl victories, Rourke was drafted by the BC Lions in the second round in 2020. His career has been marked by significant hurdles, including a Lisfranc sprain in 2022 that required surgery and a brief stint in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars, New England Patriots, New York Giants, and Atlanta Falcons. Before his professional career, he was the first player to win the Jon Cornish Trophy twice. He also spent time at Fort Scott Community College in Kansas.
Despite these setbacks, Rourke returned to the BC Lions to solidify his status as a premier talent. Beyond his record-breaking passing, he proved to be a dual-threat weapon, scoring eight of his ten rushing touchdowns in the final third of his historic 2025 season. This versatility helped lead the Lions to a second-place finish in the West Division and earned him the CFL's Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Canadian awards. His leadership helped the Lions secure a victory in the West Semi-Final. This win was clinched by a last-second field goal after a 48-yard drive.
